BSc (Hons) in Oceanography is one of the subjects of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Maritime University Faculty of Earth and Ocean Science. Oceanography subject is available in some other universities besides here.

Oceanography, as the word suggests, is the study of the ocean. Our Earth has more water than land; About 71 percent is water, the rest is land. This vast body of water is home to a wide variety of animals and plants. A large part of the oxygen we need to sustain life comes from the ocean, i.e. from marine plants. Again, due to rough seas, major disasters can occur. Like Cyclone, Tsunami etc. And not to mention the need for marine resources. So there is a need for study and research about oceans. Oceanography basically has four main parts.

• Theoretical Oceanography (Biological Oceanography); Where mainly marine life is taught.

• Chemical Oceanography (Chemical Oceanography); This section deals with the study of the chemical elements of the ocean, their arrangement and reactions.

• Physical Oceanography (Physical Oceanography); This part teaches about the physics of ocean currents, tides, temperature, density etc.

• Geological oceanography (geological oceanography), which deals primarily with the geology of the ocean floor.

While there is an opportunity to specialize in any of these four areas, each area is equally important in studying oceanography.

Bangladesh, which is a landlocked land, has been motivated to progress this change towards a higher growth rate itself. However, research in marine conservation, marine resource utilization, and marine science is still incomplete.

Bay of Bengal, is an invaluable resource that can play a fundamental role for progress and prosperity in our lives. It has an untapped potential in fisheries and marine production. However, marine environment and marine conservation needs research in our country. We need informed yet accurate information on rich news, border woes, and vulnerable marine biodiversity conservation.

The country lacks skilled manpower in marine science, and this is a critical issue. Therefore, it is important to encourage interest in marine science among students. This can help them develop their skills and abilities, and enable them to play a role in the betterment of their country's public as a skilled marine scientist.

Oceanography is a specialized field in which the changing world of oceans and coastlines is brought to light through the process of data collection and research. Working in this field does not require going to the ocean or its shores to create an impression that all oceanographic work does not just revolve around the bottom. Rather, it requires gathering information through multiple means, such as satellite data, modeling, and laboratory testing, which can generally be in-house work.

Bangladesh has many research institutes to improve research and education in oceanography, which can create invaluable opportunities for students interested in this field. Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute (BORI) is a pioneering research institute working for oceanography and marine conservation.

Naval Architecture & Offshore Engineering (NAOE)

Architecture or architecture is what we more or less understand. Maybe the building or any art that is being built today is the contribution of architecture. But what is naval architecture or naval architecture? Naval architecture or naval engineering is a branch of engineering that deals with various types of naval architecture, industry, infrastructure construction, maintenance, and solutions to various problems.

In simple terms, from dinghies to boats, our Naval Architects can work in various aspects of marine and boating and play a vital role in this field. Also, offshore engineering part of offshore engineers is responsible for proper design, construction, maintenance etc. of a navy vessel. In addition, valuable minerals are extracted from mineral water through offshore engineering and related research institutes help.

The offshore engineering field is going to flourish in Bengal and it is important to have talent and interest in it. It gives us a gateway to a ready and prosperous life and thereby helps the country to grow and prosper.
