There are two values of xx which satisfy a quadratic equation.

If the equation reads ax2+bx+c=0ax^2 + bx + c = 0, the determinant is D=b2−4acD = \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}

The two values of xx are given by x=−b±b2−4ac2a=−b±D2ax = \cfrac{-b \pm \sqrt{b^2 - 4ac}}{2a} = \cfrac{-b \pm \sqrt{D}}{2a}

As can be concluded from the equation, we will have equal roots if D=0D = 0
