The last Governor-General of the Indian subcontinent was Lord Mountbatten. He served from 15 August 1947 until 15 August 1948.
Lord Mountbatten was the last British Viceroy of India and played a key role in the partition of India and the creation of Pakistan. After India gained independence in 1947, Mountbatten continued as the Governor-General until he was succeeded by C. Rajagopalachari, who became the first Indian to hold the post in 1948.
